Gingivitis 101: Can I Reverse Early Gum Disease?
Gum disease is one of the most common oral health conditions, yet many people don't realize they have it until symptoms become noticeable. The early stage (gingivitis) can cause red, swollen, or bleeding gums. Is this reversible? Here’s what to know.

More than 42% of adults over 30 in the United States have a form of gum disease. But with prompt care and good oral hygiene habits, the early stages of gum disease may be reversible.

Visit our family dental experts at SuperTooth™, with offices in Bethesda, Gaithersburg, and Germantown, Maryland, to get screened or treated for gum disease.

Understanding the signs of early gum disease (gingivitis) and steps you can take to address it can help protect your teeth, gums, and overall health. So, can early gum disease really be reversed? Here's the scoop.

Gum disease 101

Gum disease is a common dental health condition affecting the soft tissues (gums) that support your teeth. It’s an inflammation and infection of your gums that can progressively worsen over time when not addressed. Numerous stages of gum disease exist, ranging from mild to severe. Gingivitis is the mildest form.

Gum disease symptoms

The symptoms you can experience from gum disease vary by the severity of the disease and may include:

  • Bright red or purplish gums
  • Gum recession
  • Sore gums
  • Bleeding gums
  • Unpleasant taste in your mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Pain when chewing
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together
  • Loose teeth
  • Jawbone loss
  • Tooth loss

Almost half of adults in the United States have gum disease, and it’s the leading cause of permanent tooth loss.

Stages of gum disease

Left untreated, gum disease may progress through the following four stages:

Ginvivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. It’s characterized by puffy and red gums that may bleed when you floss or brush. However, it doesn’t yet cause jawbone loss.

Mild periodontitis

If you develop mild periodontitis, harmful bacteria seep beneath your gums, which can affect the underlying bone. You might notice gum recession with pockets around your gumline.

Moderate periodontitis

When gum disease advances to moderate periodontitis, bacteria erode soft tissues and bones that anchor your teeth in place. You may notice pus around your gumline, bad breath, and even some pain.

Advanced periodontitis

Advanced periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease that may cause continued jawbone loss. You might notice your teeth becoming looser, and they could eventually fall out.

Is gum disease reversible?

When detected and treated early, gum disease is reversible, especially when it’s still in the gingivitis phase. If you have a more advanced form of gum disease and have lost bone around your teeth, it’s not reversible — but it is treatable!
